Library in Coláiste Muire

There was fierce excitement at Coláiste Muire this week as their school Library was re-opened. This was done with  the help of a €10,000 Library books capital grant. Every school in the country received this grant. The amount given to each school was based on the amount of students they had. Coláiste Muire are leading the way as they are one of the first schools in the county and possibly the country to renew their library system.

In the last number of years and particularly because of covid, the library in the school went unused. The teachers who volunteered to help restock the library were advised that any book over five years old would not appeal to students. The old books in the library were replaced by beautiful, new , modern books which would appeal to young adult readers. An electronic lending system was sourced where the students can browse the school library catalogue on -line. They can reserve and renew books also with this system.

The library is available to students to borrow books during lunch time. A team of Transition Year students and Teachers have worked tirelessly on a voluntary basis during their lunch breaks to help reopen the library in the school. It could not have been achieved without the dedication of the Ty student librarians. These include ( left to right in the photograph Mia O Neill, Philip Roe, Alan Creevy, Rossa Ryan Bovey and Elsie Taft. Isaac Devlin was also part of this team but was playing a match when the photo was taken). The teachers that helped with the project included Annette Sutton, Ellen O’ Neill, Aedín Johnston, Rob Johnston and David Irwin.  This is a huge achievement for the school and one they hope to build on in the future to encourage more students to enjoy reading.
