Congratulations to TY student Rian, who was presented with his individual Award at the Garda Youth Awards last week. He received this award for making a positive contribution to his community, in turn making it a better place to live. Last Christmas, Rian coordinated our school’s Food Drive for Cork Penny Dinner, resulting in huge amounts of donations to the local charity.
Thirty Garda National Youth Awards for 2022 have been presented to hundreds of outstanding young people throughout the country at local presentations in their respective areas. Awards were presented to young people from Galway, Clare, Laois, Kerry, Dublin, Tipperary, Longford, Meath, Donegal, Kilkenny, Cork, Monaghan, Wexford, Limerick, Mayo, and Westmeath for doing such things as cleaning beaches, raising outstanding amounts of money for worthy causes and raising awareness on issues such as mental health.
All the award winners are excellent examples of young people who give up their free time to help and support others. This is an especially strong message for all of us at a time when we all individually and collectively across all age groups must continue to work together to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

The Garda Youth Awards, at Divisional and National level, celebrates outstanding young people aged between 13 and 21 years, and recognises the good work they are doing throughout their communities.
The first ever Garda Divisional Youth Awards was created by a local Juvenile Liaison Officer in West Cork in 1995. He noticed that the young people in the community were doing tremendous things which deserved recognition. The awards have grown in leaps and bounds since then.
In 2019, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris launched the first ever An Garda Síochána National Youth Awards saying “The inaugural Garda National Youth Awards will be a showcase for the positive contribution young people are making in their communities. The awards at national and divisional level are a great way for Gardaí to develop strong relationships with community groups and young people in their area.”
